There are multiple instances where the only place to find important information was deep within the rulebook. Sadly, this lack of helpful iconography- beyond the very basics- is prevalent throughout. For certain actions that card must correspond to a specific location or to a specific type of industrial building. For each action you take, you must discard a card from your starting hand of eight cards. These actions consist of constructing buildings, establishing links, developing your industry, selling certain goods to increase your income and taking loans. In typical Roxley fashion, they have given it a makeover that makes it unrecognizable from its original look.

Otherwise, each era takes place over a series of turns in which, following turn order, each player will take two actions from among the 5 available (the same action may be repeated twice). The gameplay is the same throughout both eras except that in the Canal era players can only build canal links and, simply enough, only rail links in the Rail era. The game takes place over two eras- the Canal Era and the Rail Era. If I were to quickly define this game, I would say that it is an economic game with elements of route planning and a tad of hand management.
